Credit repair companies can help with the process of disputing and re-disputing accounts when you might become simply too frustrated to continue on your own. Just like we choose everyday to pay for services we prefer not to try alone (i.e. filing taxes, plumbing, auto repair, etc.), you may also decide that it’s worth the money to hire a credit repair professional.

If you've already used up your free credit reports for this year, you can order your credit reports directly from the credit bureaus for a fee. The bureaus all offer a three-in-one credit report that lists all three of your credit reports side-by-side. The three-in-one credit report costs more than a single credit report, but less than the combined price of purchasing your three individual credit reports.

Credit repair can involve fixing your bad credit in any way, shape or form, but when most people use the term ‘credit repair’, they’re referring to the process of disputing errors on credit reports. You can go through this dispute process for free with each of the credit bureaus on your own. This involves filing a formal dispute with the credit bureau(s) in question either online or via snail mail.
Here’s a good example of when a reputable credit repair service can help you do something you may not be able to accomplish yourself. If you have a collection account that’s been sold to a few different debt collectors, it may appear on your credit report multiple times. That information is accurate but having that one debt dinging your credit score multiple times may not meet the “fair” standard Padawer mentioned.
If you are considering using a debt relief or debt consolidation company, arm yourself with information. For a fee, they negotiate with your creditors on your behalf, resulting in lower balances or interest rates. Legitimate debt relief companies will obtain a written agreement from each one of your creditors, detailing the terms of the agreement, your obligations, and what will be reported to the credit bureaus. In some cases, if your balances are lowered the creditor might report bad debt or a charge-off, which will negatively impact your credit history and score. Also keep in mind that debt relief companies generally charge higher interest rates than your bank or mortgage lender, particularly if you have less than stellar credit. So you might not save much in the long run, especially once you factor in fees. It’s up to you to do the math.

It's important to note that repairing bad credit is a bit like losing weight: It takes time and there is no quick way to fix a credit score. In fact, out of all of the ways to improve a credit score, quick-fix efforts are the most likely to backfire, so beware of any advice that claims to improve your credit score fast. The best advice for rebuilding credit is to manage it responsibly over time. If you haven't done that, then you need to repair your credit history before you see credit score improvement. The following tips will help you with that. They are divided into categories based on the data used to calculate your credit score.

Most companies send generic, automated dispute letters on a monthly basis and charge an ongoing fee (potentially for years). You could do this yourself! They DO NOT have any urgency to get results. Think about it. The longer you stay in their program, the more money they make! They DO NOT audit creditors. Credit is complex. Using our investigative research team – we quickly assess the best way to respond to get results. They DO NOT utilize an in-house lawyer. They DO NOT pair you with a credit analyst for the whole process.

Student loans are debt you have to pay back, even if you don’t finish your degree. But depending on your situation and what kind of loans you have, you might be eligible for a different repayment plan or to get your loans forgiven. And ,when it comes to qualifying for these programs, there’s nothing a private company can do for you that you can’t do yourself for free.

Consolidating your debt into a new, lower-interest loan — a balance transfer credit card, personal loan or home equity loan — may hurt your credit scores in the short- or medium term. But if you make regular, on-time payments on that consolidation loan and pay it off in a reasonable amount of time, your credit scores should recover and may even improve over the long run as you get rid of debt faster and establish a sound payment history.

In April 2018, the average FICO® Score in the U.S. was 704, which is a good score.1 Comparatively the average VantageScore 3.0 score in 2017 was 675.2 And even though average credit scores are in the good or almost good range, they vary by age, state and other factors. So, there are still plenty of us with lower than desired scores and plenty of room for fixing credit issues. While fixing credit doesn’t happen overnight, there are steps we can take right now to get the process started.

First of all, aside from fees, you might also want to look at penalties. Almost all lenders have penalties for missing or late payments, so it’s important to make sure the fees from your lender aren’t extortionate. Next, you’ll want to see the type of repayment options available through the lender. It’s typically much easier to work with a lender that provides electronic repayments, as you can set up automatic payments that ensure you don’t miss a deadline.
Balance transfers and debt consolidation loans have one bad thing in common. Neither will do anything to reduce your debts. If you owed $20,000 and transferred it to a debt consolidation loan or to a new credit card with a lower interest rate you would still owe the $20,000. And while a debt consolidation loan might have a much more favorable interest rate it will cost you more over the long haul because it will have a much longer term. Home equity loans can be for as many as 30 years and a home equity line of credit is usually for either seven or 10 years. In comparison, if you were to choose to repay those credit card debts yourself, you might have them completely paid off in three years or less using the snowball method.
Many student loan borrowers are wondering how Donald Trump’s plans for dealing with the student loan crisis will affect them going forward.  In addition, borrowers are also wondering how his choice for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, will want to handle federal student loans in the future.  While being an outspoken advocate in many areas of education, she has yet to address the particular issue of student loans.

Credit card balance transfer: If you have a smaller credit card balance that you can pay off within up to 21 months, consider a credit card balance transfer. You can open a new credit card that offers an introductory 0% APR. Then, you can transfer other credit card balances to this card and repay them interest-free. Compare balance transfer fees and credit limits on 0% cards before you apply.

Lightstream is a great choice for people with excellent credit. It is actually part of a bank you might have heard of, SunTrust Bank. They were recently set up to offer some of the best personal loan rates available, and they are delivering. The interest rate you are charged depends upon the purpose of the loan.Interest rates can be as low as 3.99% for a new car purchase (and LightStream does not put their name on your title. They just put the cash in your bank account, and you can shop around and pay cash for the car). Home improvement loans start at 4.99% APR with AutoPay , making them cheaper and easier than a home equity loan.
Interest savings: If you have multiple sources of debt with high annual percentage rates, you can save on total interest if you get a debt consolidation loan with a lower rate. For example, if you consolidate two credit card balances with APRs of 16.24 and 23.99 percent into a debt consolidation loan with a 15 percent APR, you will save on interest. “Rates can be considerably lower than credit card interest rates, so you’ll save money in interest fees,” says credit expert John Ulzheimer, formerly of Equifax and Experian. “Second, loans have a finite amortization period, generally not longer than a few years. You can’t say the same about credit cards.”
