Debt consolidation may be a good option if you’re dealing with a manageable amount of debt but just feeling overwhelmed by the number of creditors. One good indicator of when debt consolidation is a good idea is if your debt doesn’t exceed 50% of your income. If your debt exceeds 50% of your income, debt consolidation alone may not be enough to help whittle down your total debt.

Opening several credit accounts in a short amount of time can appear risky to lenders and negatively impact your credit score. Before you take out a loan or open a new credit card account, consider the effects it could have on your credit scores. Know too, that when you're buying a car or looking around for the best mortgage rates, your inquiries may be grouped and counted as only one inquiry for the purpose of adding information to your credit report. In many commonly-used scoring models, recent inquiries have greater effect than older inquiries, and they only appear on your credit report or a maximum of 25 months.
For example, if you decide to start using your credit cards again after you’ve paid them off, your credit utilization rate may skyrocket and sink your credit rating. Similarly, if you fail to pay attention to the due date on your debt consolidation loan and miss a payment, your payment history may take a big hit as well. So, make sure you’re prepared to address all the challenges you have with credit when you take out a debt consolidation loan; otherwise, your credit rating may pay the price.
Home equity debt consolidation loans, a type of secured debt consolidation loan, offer a fixed interest rate. Interest paid on a home equity loan is usually tax deductible, while credit card interest is not. However, home equity loans for debt consolidation can be risky, as your home may be foreclosed on if you can’t pay your loan. “The danger is if you eat up a significant part of your home equity,” says Gerri Detweiler, education director of business credit website Nav.com. “Make sure you have plenty of cushion in there so if something happens and you had to sell your home, or you had to move ... you don’t end up losing your home.”

1) Trump is clearly in favor of a single IBR program going forward, which will have a shorter forgiveness period than the version currently in place. If you are in distress or default on your loans, enroll in a current Income-Driven Repayment program (or a loan rehabilitation). If you’re not, it may be best to wait and see what develops with Trump’s stated new version before you enroll. The shorter forgiveness period may end up saving you money over the long-term.
Savings vary per customer. 3,690 randomly selected borrowers in a survey conducted from 1/1/18 – 11/30/18 reported an average interest rate on outstanding debt or credit cards of 20.5%. Assuming 3% annual fees, based on CFPB, “The Consumer Credit Card Market,” 2015, that yields an APR of 22.74%. From 1/1/18 – 11/30/18, borrowers who received a loan via LendingClub to consolidate existing debt or pay off their credit card balance received an average APR of 19.2% and average loan size of $14,700. Hint: If you pay a credit card off on time regularly, your issuer will likely see you as a good credit risk and increase your credit limit. Don’t however start charging more. Simply charge the same basic amount. Doing so will keep your utilization lower! Say you started with a $2,000 limit and charged just $200 a month, you had a 10% utilization. If your limit is raised to $4,000 and you continue to charge just $200 a month, your utilization is now just 5%.

But if you make regular, on-time payments on that consolidation loan and pay it off in a reasonable amount of time, your credit scores should recover and may even improve over the long run as you get rid of debt faster and establish a sound payment history.
